Our Mission

The Maple Family Peace, Love, Sunshine Fund is committed to being a catalyst for thriving, a source of possibility, and an igniter of potential. We champion opportunities that empower individuals to discover who they are and the unique impact they are positioned to make, we invest in organizations that serve as mentors to both their communities and those they uplift to amplify personal growth, belonging, and transformation in our communities from early childhood through mature adulthood.

Our Story

Every family has a story. Ours is one of possibility, perseverance, and the responsibility we share to help others thrive. It is about the mountains we climb, the people who support us, and the understanding that a meaningful life is measured not only by what we achieve, but by what we make possible for others.

The Maple Family Peace, Love, Sunshine Fund grew from the experiences and defining moments that shaped our family and transformed our understanding of legacy. We believe every person has potential worth discovering, every life has something meaningful to contribute, and every act of encouragement can set extraordinary things in motion.

The Courage to Imagine More

  The Courage to Imagine More

On a clear morning, a young man with a complicated upbringing stood at the foot of a great mountain. Looking upward, he saw more than rock and earth. He saw a future beyond the circumstances of his early life.

That young man was Charles Maple Senior.

Charles recognized education as his path to possibility. Fueled by a love of reading, exploration, and learning, he persevered through challenges and continued reaching for new horizons. His journey took him into the United States Army and service during the Korean War. He subsequently gained admission to UCLA, the University of Chicago, and Harvard Law School.

While attending Harvard, Charles rented a room on Wendell Street in Cambridge, where he met Althea, the landlady's daughter, who would become the love of his life. Together, they raised two children, Charles Junior and Claudia.

Charles Sr. became a successful public defender, advocating for people who needed someone to stand beside them. His work reflected his conviction that everyone deserves to be heard and that opportunity brings a responsibility to help others.

He believed in education as a pathway to possibility, mentorship as a means of nurturing potential, and advocacy as a way to create a more compassionate world. His example established a lasting family principle: our responsibility is not simply to build meaningful lives for ourselves, but to use our experiences and opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others.

With their parents' support, Charles Junior pursued his passion for dance and became a professional ballet dancer. Claudia's journey would be different—unconventional, unpredictable, and marked by extraordinary challenges.

Claudia: The Art of Living Indomitably

Everyone called her Clod. She called herself Clod Hopper.

With long blond braids, a distinctive vocabulary, and a wonderfully unconventional spirit, Clod was unmistakably herself. She wore clothes woven in Guatemalan villages, followed the Grateful Dead, loved people of every kind, and approached life with insatiable curiosity. She chose exploration over convention and discovery over predictability.

Born with developmental hip dysplasia, Claudia underwent seven major hip operations. She also survived devastating automobile accidents and battled uterine cancer. Yet she continued moving forward, backpacking alone throughout Europe and embracing experiences others might have discouraged.

Clod's determination was not simply about proving what she could overcome. It was about being fully alive—discovering the world, connecting with people, and contributing something of herself. She chose engagement over retreat, curiosity over fear, and possibility over limitation.

Her life taught us that resilience is not the absence of hardship. Sometimes, it is the decision to remain open to the world even when circumstances give us reasons to turn away.

The most meaningful legacy is one whose values take root in the lives of others and continue to grow through their actions.

Peace. Love. Sunshine 4ever

When the Journey Changed

In August 2018, Claudia was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The news devastated our family, but Clod remained Clod. Until her passing on March 31, 2022, she continued to radiate positivity and strength. Though her circumstances changed, her spirit endured.

Her story was never simply about illness. It was about a woman who loved the world and continued expressing that love as her own world became increasingly difficult to navigate.

Claudia had always signed her Journal entries, letters, texts and emails with three words that captured her spirit and became inseparable from her memory: Peace. Love. Sunshine, Clod

Peace reflected the humanity she recognized in others. Love expressed her instinct to connect and care. Sunshine captured the warmth, optimism, and possibility she brought to those fortunate enough to know her.

When Claudia died, we lost someone we loved deeply. But her legacy left us with a defining question: What can we make possible for others through the lives, relationships, experiences, and opportunities we have been given?

Discovering a Deeper Purpose

Claudia's journey brought our family's beliefs into sharper focus. Charles Senior had shown us the transformative power of education, perseverance, and opportunity. His career demonstrated the importance of advocacy. Claudia showed us that life is also defined by the people we encounter, the kindness we extend, and the encouragement we offer when someone struggles to see what is possible.

Sometimes, people need more than solutions to immediate problems. They need someone who recognizes their potential, believes in their capacity to grow, and helps them imagine a different future.

It may be a mentor offering guidance at a pivotal moment, an organization creating belonging for someone who feels excluded, or an opportunity that allows a young person to discover a talent or pursue a dream.

These moments can change lives. Their impact can ripple outward as those who receive encouragement go on to mentor, support, and empower others.

We came to understand that legacy is not simply what remains after we are gone.

It is what continues because of how we lived.

Turning Belief into Possibility

The Maple Family Peace, Love, Sunshine Fund grew from this understanding. It expresses our conviction that potential exists everywhere, even when opportunity does not, and that people thrive when they are supported, encouraged, and connected to others who recognize their worth.

We seek to be a catalyst for thriving, a source of possibility, and an igniter of potential.

We champion opportunities that help individuals discover their strengths, develop their capabilities, and recognize the contributions they can make. We invest in organizations that mentor and uplift their communities, cultivate personal growth, foster belonging, and help individuals and communities achieve meaningful transformation.

Our commitment extends from early childhood through mature adulthood because the discovery of potential never ends. At every stage of life, education can expand horizons, mentorship can nurture confidence and direction, and advocacy can help people participate fully in the world around them.

We recognize that meaningful change grows through relationships, community organizations, and people willing to invest their time, resources, and belief in others.

Our purpose is therefore more than providing support. It is helping create the conditions in which people discover their potential, find belonging, and contribute to something greater than themselves.

We are stewards of the gifts and opportunities we receive, with a responsibility to use them for the benefit of others. By honoring the lives and values that shaped our family, we hope to help others find their own paths forward.

An Invitation to Climb Together

The mountain that first appeared before Charles Maple Senior remains an enduring symbol of our family's story. It reminds us that every journey begins somewhere, that our beginnings need not define our futures, and that progress requires courage and perseverance.

Claudia's life adds another dimension to that lesson. Not every mountain can be conquered as we imagined. Not every journey follows the expected path. Sometimes courage means changing direction, strength means accepting help, and the greatest meaning lies not in reaching a destination but in the people, we meet and the love we share.

We cannot remove every obstacle from another person's path, but we can help make the climb more possible. We can support organizations that guide and uplift others, create opportunities for discovery, foster belonging, and help people recognize that their lives hold possibilities worth pursuing.
